After nearly a decade of planning and almost a year of construction, the Cohn Restaurant Group's colossal Coasterra is now open on Harbor Island adjacent to their C Level Restaurant. The sprawling 28,000-square-foot project with a $15+ million budget includes a waterside restaurant and bar plus a 300-seat banquet room and a soon-to-debut floating event venue that hold up to 500 guests.
Inspired by mid-century design, Coasterra has custom murals, a tequila wall and two patios that house cabanas and fire pits; most of the seating is outdoors, with views of the San Diego skyline and harbor. The menu, developed by partner/chef Deborah Scott and kitchen's executive chef John Gray, centers around regional Mexican cuisine and includes guacamole made tableside, tuna-topped tostadas and a surf and turf dish of short rib mole and a lobster risotto cake. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with a happy hour that runs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, the bar stocks 70 labels of agave spirits for sipping or mixing into cocktails, plus a wine list that promotes bottles from Latin America and Baja and 16 taps of San Diego and Mexican craft beer.
