HILLCREST— A tipster spotted a new sign at 120 Washington Street indicating that Cafe Hielo is on the way. The Korean dessert franchise, which opened its first San Diego shop at 8072 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard earlier this year, specializes in shaved ice topped with fresh fruit, ice cream and more, plus sweet toast, pastries, sandwiches and hot and cold beverages. A rep for the cafe says the Hillcrest store should be open in a month. [EaterWire]
DEL MAR— The Gourmet Food Truck Festival is back at The Del Mar Racetrack for its fifth year; gathering 50 food trucks from all over Southern California, including The Grilled Cheese Truck, Cousins Maine Lobster, The Lime Truck and Devilicious, the noon to 6 p.m. event is free with paid admission to the racetrack. Menu items will range from $4 to $8 and can be paired with local brews from the nearby beer garden. [EaterWire]
OLD TOWN— Tickets just went on sale for the annual Taste of Old Town, scheduled for Thursday, September 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a free shuttle service cruising by 13 area restaurants, including Casa Guadalajara, Cosmopolitan Hotel & Restaurant, Miguel's Cocina and Rust General Store & Bistro, which will be giving out food samples; the $35 tickets also include tastes of spirits and beer.
