LA JOLLA— The Hake Kitchen & Bar has brought in a new executive chef to lead the nearly two-year-old restaurant; chef Todd Bencivenni once cooked at Cafe Chloe and returns to San Diego from New York City, where he trained under the James Beard Award-winning Dave Pasternak at Mario Batali's Esca. Bencivenni recently added seasonal dishes to The Hake's seafood-centric menu include olive oil-poached albacore with frisee salad, pickled mustard seeds, tomato confit and salsify chips and grilled octopus with angel hair pasta, squid ink, green onion and serrano chile. And available today starting at 4 p.m. from head of the bar Joan Villanueva is the Cinco de Mayo-themed, ‘The Fifth’ cocktail, a $5 chili-salt rimmed sipper that mixes tequila, Lillet Blanc, honey syrup and lime juice. DOWNTOWN— The menu at the Grant Grill Lounge just got a refresh and now features chorizo and clams with charred rapini and saffron aioli, a Vietnamese meatball banh mi, soft pretzels with dill butter and sea salt and more; during happy hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, food items are $2 off and there are $6 drink specials that range from wine to bottle beer and classic vodka cocktails. LIBERTY STATION— Another craft beer fest is due to land at Liberty Station on Saturday, May 23 and if you've ever wondered what it would be like to drink beer and then  run inside a human-sized hamster ball, this is your chance. The Summer Kick Off Craft Beer Fest will run from 1 to 5 p.m. and include live bands, food trucks and eateries from S&M Sausage & Meat to the New Orleans food truck and games that range from the aforementioned hamster ball to human foosball and giant Jenga. Mike Hess Brewing, Ballast Point, Groundswell Brewing Company and Kilowatt Brewing are among the breweries participating. [EaterWire]
