This year marks a half century in San Diego for Bertrand at Mister A's, the iconic penthouse restaurant located atop a high rise in Bankers Hill. First opened as Mister A's in 1965 by John Alessio, the restaurant was purchased, then renamed and remodeled, in 1999 by local restaurateur Bertrand Hug, who opened Rancho Santa Fe's Mille Fleurs.
On the eve of its 50th birthday, officially June 1, Hug has shared that he will be rebranding and remodeling the 5th Avenue restaurant. Going forward, it will revert to its original name, Mister A's, and starting this summer, the restaurant will begin a two-year facelift that will kick off with a redo of the bar and Park Room dining area, plus all new tables and chairs and an update of the wrap-around patio.
In honor of its anniversary, the restaurant has been featuring throwback dishes from Mister A's history, but expect the menu to move in a more modern direction. All staff, including chef de cuisine Stephane Voitzwinkler, will remain the same.
