Amanda Baumgarten, one of Waypoint Public's original partners and its founding executive chef, is no longer associated with the North Park restaurant. Baumgarten started her culinary career in Los Angeles and was a competitor on Top Chef season seven before moving to San Diego. She was the executive chef at Herringbone in La Jolla prior to opening Waypoint in Fall 2103; during her tenure, the craft beer-centric eatery made DRAFT Magazine's list of the Best New Beer Restaurants in the U.S.
Though the chef is still listed on Waypoint's website, the restaurant confirmed the split in a statement to Eater and said, "The Waypoint team has nothing but the deepest respect for this talented chef, as she helped elevate the restaurant to a nationally celebrated beer and food destination. We wish her nothing but the best and will continue to support Amanda in all of her future endeavors."
Two chefs who have been helping to run the kitchen at Waypoint, Caleb Ayers (Herringbone) and Dave Underwood (Burlap, Solace & The Moonlight Lounge), have now taken over the reins.
