Perched above the Mission Beach boardwalk with panoramic ocean views, Cannonball makes its grand re-debut today at Belmont Park. The all-outdoor eatery sits atop the craft beer-centric Draft, which Eat.Drink.Sleep.(Tower23) opened last year as part of the hospitality group's efforts to transform and update the beachfront park.
Cannonball first launched in Summer 2013, but closed that winter; a multi-million dollar redo, with design Colkitt & Co and Hollis Brand Culture, has expanded the rooftop restaurant's footprint to 9,400-square-feet with lots more lounge seating and fire pits, plus a dramatic LED-lit glass elevator that brings diners up from street level and a new glass "sushi cube" whose 46 seats are fed by a sushi bar menu that includes sashimi and sushi rolls. There's also a new kitchen, open until 10 p.m. nightly, where executive chef Brad Wise oversees a Pacific Rim-inspired shared plates menu that ranges from steamed mussels in green curry with Chinese sausage to spicy tuna bowls and skewers of beef tongue, shishito peppers and lemongrass chicken.
