Pacific Beach Bakery Shutters, Preps for Expansion

This week, Sugar and Scribe Bakery closed its Garnet Avenue location, which opened in 2010.

Owner and executive chef Maeve Rochford shuttered the shop to be able to focus on the bakery's new home, opening in the former Zenbu site next month; the expanded space will enable the company, newly dubbed Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods, to triple its custom cake business and will include an all-day eatery.

But Rochford says that she loves Pacific Beach and hopes to return. When the La Jolla store is settled, she and business partner Patrick Daniels plan on finding a small location near the water to open a coffee and pastry offshoot of Sugar and Scribe.
