Bay Park gets a speciality coffee boost this week as Bird Rock Coffee Roasters opens its third coffee bar on Morena Boulevard. Last year, the company moved production to this space from its flagship La Jolla Boulevard location and now roasts 10,000 to 11,000 pounds of coffee per month.
The front of the 3,000-square-foot warehouse has been turned into the new retail store and coffee bar, which founder Chuck Patton says has an intentionally more "back to basics" look than its sleekly modern Little Italy outpost, which just marked its first anniversary.
Open from 6 a.m. to noon daily, the coffee bar will serve Bird Rock's standard menu of espresso drinks, plus coffee of the day and pour overs via a new Seraphim undercounter brewing system; limited snacks, including fruit and oatmeal, will be offered. There will be mugs and coffee brewing equipment for sale, and Patton will use the space to hold accessibly-priced classes on all things coffee, stressing the importance of origin and transparency.
Next in the pipeline may be to transplant the smaller roaster from Bird Rock to this site, which would allow them to expand the original location; Patton also tells Eater that he plans to further expand his coffee bar and retail presence in early 2016.
