Barrio Logan Gets a Bright New Taco Infusion

A popular catering company goes brick-and-mortar.

A beautiful corner building with a hundred year history at the corner of Logan Avenue and Sampson Street, which once housed a Porkyland, has new food tenant.

San Diego Taco Company, named Best Caterer in San Diego CityBeat's Best Of polls in 2012 and 2014, has just opened ¡SALUD! in the Barrio Logan space, which is next to the company's catering kitchen.

Founder Ernie Becerra said that he couldn't think a better neighborhood to house his first full-service eatery, which draws inspiration from Chicano culture and the lowrider lifestyle; Becerra is a supporter of the local arts scene and was instrumental in bringing La Bodega Gallery & Studios into an adjacent warehouse.

¡SALUD!'s menu is based on what Becerra calls "new traditional" tacos, each $2.50, that range from carne asada to carnitas, birria, fried fish and sautéed vegetables tucked into hand-pressed tortillas, plus sides like Mexican corn and a mulita and quesadilla option. Though the base menu sticks to the fundamentals, there will be upcoming specials offering more exotic tacos fillings and variations on empanadas and ceviche.

The eatery's hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Future plans include a morning menu of restorative soups and stews and a beer program that will feature local breweries and craft offerings from Mexico.
