Readers and fans of baked goods have been asking for an update on the Pacific Beach-based pastry shop that's expanding with a full restaurant in the former Zenbu space.
Sugar & Scribe Bakery and Fine Foods is due to land in La Jolla in October and will offer executive chef Maeve Rochford's original bakery menu of cookies, pies and cakes, plus breakfast, lunch, dinner and takeout service.
Rochford's Irish heritage will inform the cuisine, which will range from a breakfast porridge with rhubarb compote, grilled bananas, toasted almonds and brown sugar to a farmer's pie stuffed with hard-boiled eggs and vegetables. Sugar & Scribe will also serve beer, wine and mimosas.
Partner Patrick Daniels, the restaurateur behind Bencotto Italian Kitchen and Monello, is having the same designer work on this 2,800 square foot space, which will incorporate a viewable cake decorating station and "classic and contemporary European design".
