A year ago, we shared the thrilling news that Toronado would be expanding into an adjacent storefront.
Since then, some issues with permitting have delayed the build out in the new space, a former thrift store, but during a recent check-in, James Morton of JFM Builders told Eater that the expansion will likely be finished by mid-October, just in time for San Diego Beer Week.
Next week, the construction crew plans to cut a hole in the "sticker wall" adjoining the two spaces; the existing bar will be extended into a J-shape that'll lengthen it by about 24 feet and another cooler for beer bottles will be added. The rest of the space will be filled with tables that should give Toronado an extra 45-seat capacity.
In the back, an enlarged kitchen will help them accommodate more diners and most excitingly, more cold storage will allow the bar to fully activate their 75 taps.
Eventually, owner Ian Black may also extend Toronado's back patio
