When Cafe 21 left its Gaslamp location to move into Croce's old spot up the block, the restaurant tailored the previous space into a new concept, Zymology 21, which had a test run in July and grand opens this week.

Serving brunch-style food all day long, the menu includes open-faced sandwiches, sweet and savory pancakes, and fried treats that range from tempura figs stuffed with bacon and goat cheese to frog legs and lobster corn dogs. The cocktail program is described as farm-to-bar with a "glamorous laboratory" spin. Zymology 21's drinks run from seasonal fruit shrubs that can be incorporated into any cocktail style, from gin fizz to a margarita, to sangria popsicles with a beer or wine chaser and flights of Bloody Marys and mimosas served in test tubes.

Meanwhile, up at Cafe 21's new spot, owners Alex and Leyla Javadov have just started featuring a late-night happy hour menu of more than tapas and hosting live music five nights a week.
