Real Deal Texas-Style BBQ Plus Beer for Pacific Beach

Pacific Beach's food offerings may soon be enhanced by a new eatery that pledges to bring traditional and authentic Texas-style barbecue to the beach town.

A tipster told us that Iron Pig is headed for a Garnet Avenue spot previously occupied by a sushi bar and a German deli; Kenny Casciato, who runs Ciro's Pizzeria & Beerhouse , is doing a significant remodel on the 4,000-square-foot space, including opening up a previously enclosed patio area.

For the kitchen, Casciato's tapped a former chef de cuisine at a favorite restaurant, The Smoking Goat. Rick Daniels, who also cooked at Whisknladle, has culinary chops and knows a thing or two about smoking meat, having worked at his grandfather's barbecue house in Texas.

Daniels is focusing on perfecting rubs and sauces for the meat, which will be smoked on hickory and apple wood. There will be ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, chicken - maybe even a smoked fish night - plus sides, salads and fries cut fresh in-house. When it opens in September, Iron Pig will also have 40 taps pouring beer, wine and mead.
