Hillcrest's Uptown District shopping center, home to Trader Joe's and that gauntlet of a parking lot, is on the cusp of a major redevelopment, the first since it opened in 1989.
Regency Centers, which is also developing the Balboa Mesa center that houses 85°C Bakery Cafe and Chicken Charlie's, is starting a $3 million renovation of the complex and re-dubbing it The Hub | Hillcrest Market.
New food tenants here include another location for Little Italy's Napizza, a 2010-square-foot space that should open by the end of the year, and the first San Diego outpost of the SoCal-based Ritual JuiceBox, which does 100% organic, raw and cold pressed juices, and nut milks. Their 1300-square-foot juice bar should launch this summer.
The plan for the rebooted center, whose architect was the late Graham Downes, will have a new central patio; the company's currently seeking restaurants to fill two available spots, 1,100sf and 2,085sf, that open onto the courtyard.
All the work on The Hub, which includes murals by local artists, should be done by Fall 2014.
