The Blue Door Winery, which has been operating a tasting room in the heart of Julian for three years, is heading into the city and moving their wine production facility to a nearly 3,000-square-foot space on Morena Boulevard that will include a new tasting room. The boutique winery is also keeping their Julian outpost.
Marc Hashagen started wine-making as a hobby and turned professional in 2007. He sources grapes from four different San Diego County vineyards for the twelve varietals that the Blue Door produces, which include a Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Chardonnay. His wine-making operation, originally based in San Marcos, will move into the Morena space, allowing him to significantly ramp up production.
When the tasting room opens next month, it'll be open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and offer sampler flights, full glasses and bottles, plus their famous house sangria. Their spot is just steps away from Kitchen 4140, so they'll encourage their guests to bring in takeout from the restaurant.
Hashagen and his family live in South Park, and he tells Eater that they hope to eventually own and operate a bistro in that neighborhood.
