What's a beer lover to do when he realizes he's retired too early and isn't ready to spend his golden years on the golf course? If you're Steve Munson, you turn passion into pints and create the Dos Desperados Brewery, now up and running in Munson's hometown of San Marcos.
Munson's labor of love, with support from wife Dora and daughter Shelly, features an 800 square-foot tasting room, a 7BBL system, and an array of house brews on tap; current pours include the Fugitive Farmhouse (a Saison-style brew), Mamacita's Cream Ale, Two-Timer Scottish Ale, Irish Vanilla Stout and a Belgian tripel. Munson ultimately plans on adding to his repertoire, hoping to eventually stock 10 to 12 signature beers.
In the imminent future, he intends to add habaneros to his IPA and stout… "creating interesting blends," as he puts it. For now, the beer is only available at their tasting room, but Munson plans to begin distributing kegs to bars and restaurants as soon as he can. Though there's nothing lined up in terms of food at the moment, food trucks will likely be a semi-regular fixture at Dos Desperados.
A more permanent part of the brewery is and will be the Dos Desperados "Viven Club," a beer club with member benefits including discounts, growlers, t-shirts and more.
Dos Desperados Brewery will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday from 4 to 9 p.m., Satuday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
