Kearny Mesa's beer presence keeps growing stronger. The latest entry, Common Theory Public House, comes courtesy of two UCSD grads seeking to combine their fondness of the neighborhood's Asian cuisine with their love of craft beer.
Cristian Liang and Joon Lee's new beer-centric eatery is currently under construction on Convoy Street, in a 5,500-square-foot space most recently occupied by a Korean restaurant. The 32-foot bar, backed with 30 taps, will feature all the usual suspects, but Common Theory hopes to also give play to some of the newer, smaller breweries.
A second, smaller four tap bar in the back of the space will focus on highlighting regional beers, including Asian and Belgian breweries and hosting local brewery tap takeovers.
Liang and Lee are crafting an eclectic lunch and dinner menu that will include Korean-style fried chicken, BBQ'd meats, savory seafood pancakes and spicy Asian soups, but they've also hired chef Dave Birtness (formerly of Humphrey's By the Bay) to oversee their American and Italian cuisine offerings. But Liang was quick to tell Eater that they aren't planing on doing fusion food; each dish will be faithfully authentic and all beer-friendly.
The space, which will include a game room, lounge area and mix of small and communal tables, should softly open by mid-April, with a grand opening scheduled for early May.
