New URBN St. Brewing Co.'s Debut Beers, Menu Info

The brewpub collaboration between former Stone Brewing Co. chef Alex Carballo and restaurateur Jon Mangini (URBN North Park and Vista, BASIC, Gang Kitchen) is well underway in El Cajon, where the new URBN St. Brewing Co. is taking over the 4,000-square-foot site vacated by the El Cajon Brewing Company last year.

Callaway Ryan (Stone Brewing Co.) has joined the partnership as head brewer and will brew on the existing 15-barrel brewhouse, telling Eater that he's looking forward to scaling back down to a manual brewery system. Ryan says that he has at least ten beer recipes on tap for URBN's house lineup, including sessionable styles including a 4% ABV summer ale. URBN has been contract brewing at Twisted Manzanita Ales while waiting for their permitting to come through; in a couple weeks, two of their core beers, an IPA and an American brown ale, will make their first debut on tap at the group's eateries, including BASIC and Gang Kitchen.

The team shared that they plan to can the beers and are looking towards building a larger-scale production brewery within the next year.

Carballo's menu will include URBN's signature coal-fired pizza as well as house sausages made with some of the brewery's beers and entrees that range from smoked chicken to a stuffed pork chop; their brunch will feature build-your-own quiches.

The 42-tap brewpub will have the raw industrial elements that are the hallmark of URBN and BASIC, says Mangini, from garage doors to steel and concrete; it's launch is scheduled for mid-April.
