Eater has learned that chef Jason Gethin of North County's Union Kitchen and Tap is taking over The Corner Restaurant & Bar, the burger-centric eatery which opened in 2008.
Gethin holds culinary degrees from the Louisiana Culinary Institute and Johnson & Wales and was part of the Cohn Restaurant Group roster before joining Union; his last day at the Encinitas restaurant is February 28.
The chef is partnering with The Corner's current ownership to completely redo the two-story 3,500-square-foot historic Carnation Milk Factory building in the East Village (369 10th Ave.) with their reopening due in April or May.
He told Eater they're still settling on a name for the new restaurant, but the menu will focus on modern new American food. The concept will also feature craft beer and cocktails using homemade sodas. They'll start with dinner service only, but eventually expand to weekend brunch. As part of the remodel, Gethin is adding an open kitchen to the downstairs section of a restaurant, with a bar for dining that overlooks it.
