After much speculation, Eater can share the exact spot that'll be home to the highly-anticipated solo project from chef Chad White, which will span two East Village storefronts currently under construction.
When finished, likely in May; Común Kitchen & Tavern will encompass a large sidewalk patio, a bar and lounge and an open kitchen showcase with an intimate chef's table; the style will be raw and industrial, with custom made rustic furnishings.
White's partners in the restaurant are Shane Brennan and Demien Farrell of Enlightened Hospitality Group; the chef once worked at EHGRP's Gabardine and this new project is being shepherded by EHGRP's longtime collaborators, Alfredo Jaime and Rodolfo Farber of Jaime Partners.
Brennan told Eater that they hope the restaurant will become a neighborhood staple, the "Cheers of East Village San Diego where everyone knows your name".
This project is high stakes for White, who has made a name for himself in Baja cuisine, thanks to his Plancha Baja Med pop-up and frequent cooking gigs and collaborations in Mexico, which include a just-opened gastro bar in Tijuana.
He says that though Mexican food is his main love, the menu will also pull from other cuisines, citing NYC's Momofuku, NOMA in Denmark and Mexico's El Tajer and Corazón de Tierra as specific inspirations.
The food might include pig head tacos, octopus and whole legs of lamb for family-style sharing; White also plans to offer nightly surprise menus for the diners who reserve a seat at the bar that peers into the kitchen.
