Pizza e Birra Says Buongiorno to India Street's Restaurant Row

Now open at 3625 India Street.

Just south of the bustling stretch of India Street that holds Saffron and Blue Water Grill is the new Pizza e Birra, which was opened this week by Laura and Raffaele Petrazzuolo, who also own Sapori Italian Restaurant in Coronado.

Their new 2,000-square-foot Middletown spot, set in the base of The Charmer, a Jonathan Segal building, is a more casual eatery that aims to fill a niche in the neighborhood, with seating for 120 and two large patios.

Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, Pizza e Birra has 24 beer taps, mostly craft, and a small, straightforward wine list, offering just the choice of red or white from dry, sweet, sparkling and boutique wine categories.

There are shareable starters, from bar bites like chicken wings and mozzarella sticks to cured meats and cheese, and few salads, but their focus is on stone oven pizzas, slung by an Italian pizzaiolo, that range from classic Margherita to proscuitto and arugula and the Bella, which tops a pie with potato, bacon and a creamy white sauce.
