Eater readers alerted us to Ototo Sushi Co.'s opening in Balboa Mesa, across the shopping plaza from cult bakery 85°C Degrees.

Early word on the concept has been pretty favorable; owner Hiroshi Toukairin, who runs Point Loma's Sushiya, put together a menu that combines sashimi, nigiri, hand rolls and sushi rolls with ramen, salads and Japanese small plates that range from fried chicken karaage to broiled yellowtail collars.

Ototo is also featuring craft beer taps, and offering a flight of four beers for $8.50. According to Toukarin, he has more eateries on the way, including ramen-only spots in North County or Chula Vista.
