Japanese Ramen Bar & Izakaya-Style Eatery in the Works for Hillcrest

A global brand expands to San Diego.

Eater readers have been asking us to follow up on our earlier story about a new Hillcrest ramen restaurant.

We can confirm that JINYA Ramen Bar, which has locations in the LA area and Las Vegas, will slot into 815 University Avenue, where an existing structure will be demolished to build a 2,800-square-foot space with a mezzanine. And the rumors are true; sister restaurant Robata JINYA will occupy the adjacent 7,400-square-foot two-story building at the corner of University and 8th. This will be only the second Robata JINYA stateside; there is a location in West Hollywood, but the rest are in Asia.

Ikeo Design will oversee both spaces, which are estimated to be completed in Spring 2015.

We hearing that JINYA Ramen Bar's menu, which centers around tonkotsu ramen, will be similar to its other locations but the izakaya-style offerings at Robata JINYA, which include grilled skewers, sushi and small plates, will expand in San Diego. The company told Eater that it may consider opening more of the concepts in other local neighborhoods.
