Our initial speculation that Cafe 21 would be taking over the coveted corner spot in the Gaslamp, occupied by Croce's until the eatery and live music venue's move to Park West at the beginning of the year, has been confirmed.
Owner Alex Javadov has the keys to the space, which is twice the size of their current digs just a few doors south; he told Eater that they'll do some minor renovation before reopening in the spring, and plan to keep their restaurant at 750 5th Ave. open until the new spot is ready.
Once settled, they'll pick up where Croce's left off, offering live music in the evenings and during weekend brunch. Leyla Javadov, Alex's wife and Cafe 21's executive chef, will be keeping the food menu in line with their current Gaslamp spot and original University Heights location.
Javadov told Eater that the couple has explored potential sites in North County, where their third Cafe 21 will likely be located.
