Go Greek at La Jolla's New barleyanfigs

New, 5 comments

A reader wrote in to ask us to scope out a new restaurant on La Jolla Boulevard that opened without fanfare this week.

Constantine Coss and his wife Sofi ran a well-regarded Greek restaurant in West Hollywood during the '80s and '90s before moving to Europe. Now, they're back in Southern California with barleyanfigs, a neighborhood bistro just a stone's throw from Windansea beach.

Sofi is the chef here, cooking fresh and authentic Greek food, from spanakopita and stuffed grape leaves to grilled octopus and fisherman's stew. They use grass fed beef in their mousaka and pastitsio and make the desserts in-house, including loukoumathes, fritters drizzled with honey and walnuts, and a Greek yogurt mousse topped with preserved fruit. The couple also plans to build a vegetable garden behind the restaurant.

Operating hours are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
