It's a big weekend for Modern Times Beer; founder Jacob McKean is just putting the finishing touches on the tasting room in their new Point Loma brewery, which is scheduled to welcome beer drinkers starting Friday at noon.
The brewery, "Lomaland Fermatorium", will be open daily from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.. A white marble-topped tasting bar has a front made of old books and oh yeah, there's that 21-foot-high mosaic, painstakingly hand constructed from 10,000-plus Post-it Notes, that pays homage to the now-legendary Jeff Koons sculpture of Michael Jackson and his beloved pet monkey, Bubbles.
Modern Times' trio of brewers will have their year-round beers on tap, including Lomaland saison, Fortunate Islands wheat, and the amber Blazing World, which are also now available in bars and eateries. A couple special releases should be pouring too, including Neverwhere, a triple-hopped 100% Brett beer.
The brewery's next big endeavor is to get their core beer into cans, which are expected to be on shelves within the next couple months. And what about those sour beers? On Modern Times' blog, brewerMike Tonsmeire, writes that their barrel-aged sour beer won't be released until next summer, but a few non-aged tart beers should come online before then.
