The transformation of Red Light District Dining Room & Social House into the new ViVa bar + kitchen is complete; the restaurant officially opens Friday at 3 p.m., just in time for happy hour.
After folding Red Light and parting ways with its chef, Jason Maitland, ASAN Restaurant Concepts decided to re-concept and redecorate the space, toning down the volume on the decor and developing a new menu of shareable plates priced at $7, $9 and $11, that are inspired by Latin American food cultures.
There's the fried plantain-based mofongo from Puerto Rico, Spanish paella, baked razor clams from Chile, Brazilian skirt steak with chimichurri and a sampler of Mexican and Peruvian ceviche. ViVa's open until 2 a.m., Thursday through Sunday, and the late night $5 menu includes queso fundido and papas bravas, fried potatoes cloaked in a creamy aioli. Weekend brunch (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) features a chorizo omelet, a Cuban sandwich, churros and more. Cocktails are generous pours that lean more towards the classics than craft and wine list has been made more accessible; the new eclectic selection of bottles is all available by the glass too, starting at $7.
