DOWNTOWN— If your idea of fun is watching your favorite chefs eat like their lives depend on it, then head on down to Jsix tomorrow night for the restaurant's annual Shuck 'N' Swallow event, a showdown between kitchen teams from Cucina Urbana, Cafe Chloe, Spike Africa's, Oceanaire and more to see who can open and slurp the most oysters in ten minutes. Brian Malarkey will emcee the evening, and there will be food and drink specials for the crowd, plus the opportunity to enter into a bivalve-eating contest of your own. Doors open at 5 p.m.; the event starts at 6 p.m. [EaterWire]
BARRIO LOGAN— This Saturday, April 10, the San Diego Public Market will be the site of yet another delicious food event; this time it's a fundraiser for Just Call Us Volunteers, a San Diego-based nonprofit cooks and serves healthy meals to the city's homeless. Tickets for a "Taste of Asia" are $55 for 10 food samples and two drinks or $75 for unlimited eats. Participants include Miguel Valdez from Red Door Restaurant & Wine Bar, Craig Jimenez from Roseville Cozinha, Alex Carballo from Stone Brewing & World Bistro, Marcus Twilegar from Tender Greens, Chad White from Plancha Baja Med, Javier Placencia from Erizo, Jennifer Costa from A.R. Valentien and the Snake Oil Cocktail Co. Entertainment will be provided by lion dancers and demonstrations in sumo wrestling and martial arts. [EaterWire]
PACIFIC BEACH— Ciro's Pacific Beach location has just launched a new breakfast menu that includes coconut-stout pancakes, chilaquiles, homemade biscuits and gravy and a sandwich called the Fat Elvis that heaps bacon and bananas on peanut butter and maple syrup-slathered brioche. There's less gut-busting fare too; healthier options like acai bowls and egg white omelets. [EaterWire]
