After months of anticipation and longing stares though the shop window, Donut Bar has announced their grand opening will be Saturday at 8 a.m.
Owners Santiago Campa and Wendy Bartels spent a year scouting locations thoughout San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles before settling on downtown's busy Financial District. They're hoping local office workers will stop in frequently for a sweet treat, tempted by Donut Bar's $1 coffee (San Diego Coffee Roasters) and $1 donut deals.
Flavor-wise, there will be six standard donut varieties available on the regular, likely including an apple fritter and a classic old fashioned, and one special donut creation. Donut Bar's original flavors include a blueberry old fashioned donut with fresh Meyer lemon glaze, a bourbon maple glazed donut with sea salt, a custard-filled donut with a caramelized sugar top, a maple-bacon bar, a brown butter glazed yeast donut and a birthday cake donut with sprinkles. A free public taste test on Thursday afternoon was attended by 200 donut fanatics.
Donut Bar plans to make 1,000 donuts a day, and will open at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and close when the day's donuts are all sold. Saturday's hours are 8 a.m. to noon.
A custom milk dispenser didn't get installed in time for their opening but it will eventually serve plain, strawberry and chocolate milk. Future projects also include the remodel of an upstairs space into a spacious 30-seat lounge with free wifi. Additional Donut Bar locations may follow.
