The Waterfront Owner Brings Beer, Burgers to Gaijin Spot

After the sad shuttering of Gaijin, Eater readers have been wondering if The West Group (Bar West, The Griffin) would keep the space and slot in another concept.

Partner Chris Martin says the hospitality management company is selling the Gaslamp location to Chad Cline, who co-owns Little Italy's The Waterfront Bar and Grill and Harbor Town Pub in Point Loma with his family.

Cline told Eater that he's opening Werewolf, a "San Diego version of a London pub", in the 2,500-square-foot space, adding booths and expanding the bar with the intention of launching in early 2014.

The menu will be similar to Harbor Town's mix of burgers, tacos, sandwiches and salads; Cline is also aiming to put in 30-plus beer taps.

He says that downtown wasn't on his radar for expansion until the Gaijin opportunity presented itself; Cline likes to bring his pub concepts to neighborhoods, and says that he's also working on developing a new location in the Sunset Cliffs area, scheduled for a 2015 opening.
