There will be lots to geek out about at theLab, coming soon to busy Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. The 1,400 square foot, 35 seat cafe is the first sit-down shop from local roaster Better Buzz Coffee, which currently operates coffee carts and drive-thru locations out of a 10,000 square foot production coffee roasting facility and barista training center in Vista.
Tim Langdon, Better Buzz's owner, gave Eater a preview of his new modern coffee concept, scheduled to be operational by late January. theLab will feature two coffee bars— the main bar will dispense coffee drinks, including salted caramel lattes and their Killer Bee (coffee topped with a double or triple espresso) while the other bar will be dedicated to the art and science of coffee, educating about coffee cupping and espresso extraction and demonstrating latte art techniques. Better Buzz sources their beans from women-run or women-owned coffee estates, 15 varieties in all.
In addition to their custom pour over's and coffee siphons, Langdon's particularly excited about theLab's cold brew system, comprised of special, hard-to-find equipment from Japan, which will drip three liters of coffee each 20 to 24 hour period. Better Buzz will make four kinds of cold brew and bottle it to-go.
theLab will open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m and serve breakfast (scones, bagels, oatmeal and eggs) and light appetizers and desserts later in the day.
Langdon also shared that Better Buzz has another coffee project in the works, this one set for North Park — a 50's style concept with a small batch roaster that'll also serve food and craft beer.
