For Christmas this year, Ocean Beach landmark South Beach Bar & Grille gave itself the gift of a major facelift. The Newport Avenue restaurant closed for five weeks and reopened on December 26, debuting a shiny new look after nearly 20 years in operation.
Eater San Diego stopped in for a preview of the newly revamped space; most of the changes are cosmetic — old flooring was replaced with fresh carpet and marble and existing seating got swapped with glossy high top tables and bar stools — the intention was to match the downstairs bar and dining room with the upstairs eating area, which the restaurant acquired just two years ago. But regulars can rest easy, the place may look new but otherwise everything's the same; South Beach is still open from 11 to 2 a.m. every day and the menu remains unchanged.
